Sale of Chometz - Privacy

As you fill in our site's questionnaire, you will notice that we're asking for some specific and personal information (for instance, within which time zone you will be for Pesach and who will have access to your house if you're away). To be honest, we're a bit uncomfortable with that, but there really is no way for us to successfully sell your chometz to a non-Jew without this information.

The underlying principle of this whole transaction is that the non-Jew is the rightful owner of all of your chometz and that he could, if he chooses, appraise and pay its true, full value and come take his property any time he likes. If he couldn't get to it (if, for instance, your house was inaccessible for the entire week), then in which sense is it really his?

The fact is, that our non-Jewish associate (who we have personally known and trusted for years) has no practical interest in the food you've sold him. The odds against his deciding to come for his property are astronomically high (and in any case, he would have to work through us and, together, we would have to give you reasonable notice before showing up). But the theoretical possibility has to be there. Therefore, for the sale to be valid, we must have some method of gaining access to the chometz. A phone number of a neighbor with the key is the minimum we will need.

It is our policy to keep this information on file only for the duration of Pesach (until we purchase the chometz back from the non-Jew), after which it will be erased.
